Wood Kiln Firing

We fired for the first time in June 2004. Several other potters shared the space, and many friends and family contributed a pot or two for good luck. The firing took 20 hours in total, and burned 2 cords of wood. I was very pleased to find that we could reach temperature (cone 11) easily and that the kiln seemed to fire evenly and with good reduction. Now that we know that the design works we can start learning how to really use it.

We fired for a second time in the fall of 2004, again with both pots and help from family and friends. This firing was faster than the first and I certainly felt that it was more under control. New clay body tests showed much nicer flashing colors and patterns, and we found more successful glazes for the future. There will be 2 firings in the spring of 2005. One will be mostly large planters and we hope to have a selection of a dozen or more in the shop this summer. The second firing, in late May I hope, will be be our regular mix of functional pots.
